Adapted Curriculum

At Coddington CofE Primary School and Nursery, we aim to offer an excellent education for all our children. We intent to achieve this through high expectations, the removal of barriers to learning and a well-planned curriculum. We want all our children to feel that they are a valued part of our school community and thrive with their learning and development. We respect that some children:   

  • have different educational and behavioural needs 

  • require different strategies for learning  

  • acquire and communicate information at different rates  

  • need a range of different teaching approaches and experiences  

 Teachers are well-trained to respond to all children’s needs initially through quality first teaching and inclusion in the classroom, with strategies tailored to support individuals needs. This is detailed in our graduated response below. 

Adapted Curriculum

As a school, we strive to equip all children with the knowledge and skills they need to become independent learners and to fulfil their potential. Every child at Coddington accesses a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum that may be adapted to meet individual needs and interests. Our adapted curriculum identifies key pieces of knowledge that are selected in order to prepare some children for their next steps of learning.

Subject leaders have carefully identified core strands of learning in the overall curriculum which will allow all children to learn concepts that are essential for their development and their ability to live as independent adults.

In addition to the adapted curriculum, a small group of children also access our Learning and Life Skills provision.  This provision is primarily aimed to equip children with the skills they need to access the (adapted) curriculum and to help them to lead safe, independent and meaningful lives. The planning is based around specific targets, for example, from an EHCP or AET category and enhances some academic areas but does not replace any subjects or aspects of the curriculum. 

All subject leaders have identified potential barriers to learning across all four areas of need: 

  • Cognition and Learning 
  • Communication and Interaction
  • Physical and/or Sensory
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health

For each of these areas they have also identified provision that may support children access the adapted curriculum.

Adapted Teaching

At Coddington Primary School we adapt our teaching to meet the needs of all children. We have high expectations for all and ensure children have access to a wide range of strategies, resources and scaffolds in order to participate fully and achieve in all lessons. Teachers use responsive teaching and continually assess children during lessons and make adaptions as required. Adaptations may include visual aids, recalling prior knowledge, opportunities for oral rehearsal and an emphasis on developing vocabulary. Children working at Greater Depth are challenged and given opportunities to extend, apply and deepen their knowledge as part of these adaptations.
